BACKGROUND (can skip):
I use this semi-old computer at work with some old software (no chance of upgrading OS or computer w/o massive investment in software) in the printing industry.

One of my FEW backup strategies for client art is a DVD which gets mailed to one of the owners in AZ as fire-prevention... and it helps keep him off my case. Not a big cloud believer, and wouldn't want to hog the already low up-link speed for hours anyway.

A little sidetracked I know, I just anticipated hearing about my old software, or that DVDs should not be a backup solution... both of which I know... now on to my problem:

PROBLEM:
When I used finder to burn the dvd, it would take forever. It's been a while, but I would say 40-60 min to burn, and another 20 or so to verify.

I quickly got fed up with this, and downloaded a third-party solution for burning. This has speed settings like I was used to in Windows. (I now know that the max on this old burner is 8x). Now it takes me about 8 min to burn a DVD (HFS+).

To test my DVD I dump it back to the hard drive, the freeware program doesn't have verification. This process still takes me 20 minutes. Read speed is faster the write... so this seems crazy. 8 to write, 20 to read.

If I think back 5 or 10 years, it feels to me that finder is using base read and write speeds. I could do the math, but either way it comes out way too slow.

Is there some hidden setting somewhere to tell Finder to kick it up a notch?

Thanks. (Sorry, I always get wordy.)
