If I buy Leopard when it comes out, will 10.5.1 be a simple software update or will I miss out on it entirely unless I buy the new version?

In turn, we should expect that 10.5.x updates will also be free. The Dot.Dot releases are more the "Bug-fix" variety than a way to introduce new features. New features are what you pay for, and those are the Dot releases.
