I am trying to install the new update, but my mbp has been stuck on 'writing package receipts' for almost 2 hours.

That doesnt sound right, my install took less than 3 minutes including restarts. You might want to abort and Download the Installer instead of using Software Update.

Thanks for the advise! I did a force shutdown, downloaded the update from Apple directly (instead of software update), and it took about 3 min., just like you said. Thanks again!
