10.5 client to 10.6 server

Hey, I am running 10.5.8 client version on a mac pro and all its doing is running kerio mail server and filemaker server.
we want to upgrade to 10.6 server to take advantage of some of the features, I already have the software but is it just as easy as putting in the disc and installing?
I have heard that you have to go to 10.6 client 1st, then upgrade to 10.6 server.

any help is appreciated
