Apple's rumored 10.5-inch iPad Pro will have a higher resolution of 2,224×1,668 pixels, while maintaining the same pixel density as the current 9.7-inch iPad Pro, according to IHS Markit director of tablets and PCs Rhoda Alexander.

Specifically, she told Forbes that a 10.5-inch iPad Pro at 2,224×1,668 would have 264 PPI, equal to the current 9.7-inch iPad Pro at 2,048×1,536.

The article actually quoted Alexander as saying the 10.5-inch iPad Pro will have a 2,024×1,668 resolution, but she confirmed to MacRumors that this was a typo and that she indeed expects a resolution of 2,224×1,668.

If the 10.5-inch iPad Pro does in fact end up having the same pixel density as the current 9.7-inch iPad Pro, that would go against another mathematically possible scenario in which the tablet could have the same 2,732×2,048 resolution as the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro, with the same pixel density as the iPad mini 4.

In line with existing rumors, Alexander said the 10.5-inch iPad Pro will have slimmer bezels that allow it to have the same overall footprint as the 9.7-inch iPad Pro. She reportedly expects the 10.5-inch iPad Pro to "arrive in the March-April timeframe," which lines up with Apple's rumored March event.

Japanese blog Mac Otakara said Apple will release four new iPad Pro models at a March event. The report said the 10.5-inch model may not ship until May, while new 7.9-inch, 9.7-inch, and 12.9-inch models are said to ship in March. DigiTimes likewise said the 10.5-inch iPad Pro may not come until May-June.

Alexander also said Apple's rumored low-cost 9.7-inch iPad Pro could start at $299, which would be $100 cheaper than the iPad Air 2. It could supplant the iPad mini 4, which Alexander said may not be updated. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the low-cost model could have an older A9X chip.

No, I expect it to have the same 2732x2048 resolution as the 12.9" Pro.

"Alexander also said Apple's rumored low-cost 9.7-inch iPad Pro could start at $299"

If true, looks like I am finally going to replace mom's iPad mini from a few years ago.

would be surprised if price was that low thou

    "Four new iPad Pros"

So can we just go back to calling them "iPads" now?

At this point, the only thing which would get my attention regarding iPhones and iPads is a revamped iOS.

Incremental hardware changes suffer from diminishing returns, compounded by the fact that iOS' UI is not intuitive, complicated, "in-organic" and stale. IMHO

Four iPads... Four. For some reason a lot of options make me feel uncomfortable and is not even my company.

The iOS lineup should've stayed black and white, 2 sizes at most, all features for both.

Adding another (i.e., different) resolution will complicate things for developers. Too many apps still not optimized for the 12.9" iPad Pro. Can't imagine adding yet another resolution for developers to ignore. :-/

    They'll reserve that for 10.5 Pro 2. ;)

An iPad Pro for just $299 could convince me to buy me an iPad... again.

Never in a million years. Never, ever. That's how much it will be worth, but I just don't see Tim Cook letting a new model ipad out the door for under $499

It is interesting that a company which has a proud heritage of embracing simplicity has increasingly complicated product lineups.

Maybe it’s the pro-consumer road to take - not trying to fit every round peg into four square holes. But I find it confusing.

The hardware doesn't need much help, it's iOS that has to get better on iPad - right now it's iPhone-caliber literally "phoning it in" on the tablet form factor.

    I wouldn't count on a 299 price point.

Four iPads are a lot options?!
That's because Apple has trained their customers that choice and options are bad. Many people want Apple to simply have one model (or at most 2) in each category (phone, tablet, notebook, desktop) that feeds the narrative of, "Apple, just make the decision for me".

What is the cause of that? Is it the developer tools that Apple provides? Is it the design decision of the developer?

Color me surprised if the "low-cost"/$299 iPad isn't just a rebranded Air 2 (if Apple bothers to even rebrand it, it could just slash the price to make it more entry-level given its older hardware).

That resolution is pretty weird. I'd only get 100 pixels extra in landscape for web browsing when divided down to display resolution as opposed to going by pixel count. Of which, there is little advantage

I'm gonna go iPad mini density and iPad Pro resolution.

Around two years ago I was at Best Buy and saw the screen on whatever the Galaxy S was back then and was blown away by how beautiful it looked. Maybe in the next four years or so (not exaggerating) Apple can make it to where the Galaxy was back then in more than just their top-of-the-line, $1000 iPhone 8.

*I'm not looking for an argument*

Thank heaven for daughters (and sons). Ours is going to get her dad's 9.7" Pro whenever they become abundant enough to actually purchase as opposed to seeing them on Apple's site with a "coming in three months" notice after the initial preorder amount of 130 sells out. ;) He and I are going to be waiting for the 10.5" one.

Our minis will continue to be used. I use minis until they can barely work anymore. I have only minis so nobody is getting my minis!

I will, however, also keep an eye out for how things go with the new Samsung tablets announced yesterday. They are probably not the right match for me, but I like to keep apprised of the options.

Truth be told, i'm fine with iPad hardware. It's iOS which bores me. What was that line?... "great software sells hardware"
