10.6.1 Disc to update 10.5.6?

Can I use a 10.6.1 install disc to "active install" on a 10.5.6 mac? The support told me to active install, but we can't find the original install disc, but have the new one.

You can 'archive' and install using the new disks, but this will update your OS to 10.6 (Snow Leopard) from 10.5 (Leopard).

Thank you. If it updates the OS to 10.6, is that okay? Does that change anything?

If you upgrade with you 10.6 disc, you will be running 10.6. The general consensus is that it's better, and you'll probably be fine with it unless you have some applications that won't run in 10.6.
