I have an iMac 8,1 which originally came with Leopard 10.5.2. Over the course of time, after upgrading all the way to 10.5.8, I bought SnowLeopard and have gone all the way to 10.6.8. I did a Disk Utility verify the other day and it posted a problem with the hard disk. I inserted the SnowLeopard DVD and the machine promptly spat it out. Looking at the disk, there's a whacking great scratch on it! I can't get it to work on any of my machines.

My question is, if I boot from the 10.5.2 disk that came with the machine originally and use the version of Disk Utility on that, is there a chance that, due to the differing system versions, I could do more damage than good?
