Exactly 10 years ago today, on June 29, 2007, the original iPhone went on sale, six months after Steve Jobs stood onstage at Macworld Expo 2007 in San Francisco and told the world Apple was reinventing the phone, revolutionizing an entire industry like it had done with the Macintosh in 1984 and the iPod in 2001.

The iPhone, with its 3.5-inch display, lack of a physical keyboard, Apple-designed touch-based user interface, and multi-touch support, was unique among phones of that era, and as Jobs promised, it changed everything. The product that some speculated would fail miserably shaped the smartphone industry and made Apple one of the most valuable companies in the world.

Even before the public had touched an iPhone, there was incredible hype, just like there is today with each new iteration. In the days leading up to the iPhone's release, MacRumors shared dozens of stories, like sightings out in the wild, photos of training manuals, benchmarks, in-store displays, and banners outside of stores. And of course, before the first iPhone launched, there were already rumors of an iPhone 2.

It was/is the most amazing phone i've ever had. I remember ATT servers were overloaded and it took me the entire weekend to get it activated. It wasn't until Monday morning that I could finally use it. I still have the original bag and box that it came in (pictured). And the phone is in mint condition!!!

10 years ago, no one had a smart phone. Now, most people in many countries do. Pretty amazing! Truly a life-changing event, all things considered.
That's not true. I had a Palm Treo. There were even two versions, one that ran Palm OS and another that ran Windows Mobile. I had the Palm OS version, and it sucked ass. But it was a smart phone.

AKA "The Jesus Phone." Funny -- that was even before 3rd party apps AND it had 2G cellular. Nevertheless I camped out at ATT for 4 hours because the line was shorter than at the Apple Store. I got the very last 8GB. They were so slow at ATT that by the time I had my phone the long line at the Apple Store around the corner had already dissipated. Curious I went in and asked if they had any 8GB model. They did. Face Palm. Lesson learned -- don't buy iPhones on launch day from ATT.

Too bad steve is not around cause not much has changed..
Repeating ignorant statements doesn't make them true. The evolution of the phone and its resulting capabilities, not to mention the interconnectivity to things like the Apple watch, continue to do exactly what Steve Jobs envisioned - advance people's lifestyles. Jobs was never about the technology. The capabilities of today's iPhones and their impacts on people's lives are vastly different than the original iPhone and that is exactly what Jobs was looking for.

I remember waiting in the UK for the release only I was on Vodafone at the time...The few people I knew that had one I watched in envy...I did switch to O2 in the end, but for the 3G which was a magical moment. I did the yearly release Q at my local Apple Store in Westfield until the 5. It was always fun and like a Christmas Day. Thanks Apple (and Steve Jobs of course) for the magic!
