Something I noticed is that the 1000 nits (up to 1600) is only when displaying HDR content and that SDR content is shown in 600 nits (100 brighter than the Pro Display XDR - that display is 500 nits for SDR).

Do we know if developers can create HDR experiences outside of video? Can a drawing app for instance put the iPad into HDR mode?

I personally would love a HDR mode for when I’m working in sunlight and I want that display cranked to be able to see it better outside! I don’t think this will be a thing though.

Very excited to see how this new display behaves in real day to day usage!

Not sure if you would want 1000 nits on anything without high dynamic range. You are likely to blow out highlights and/or make shadows look grayish. I suppose application developers could make HDR video/animation for games and such, but you would only need that if you are outdoors in the sun.

Don't get me wrong, having a screen brightly lit with micro leds should look spectacular when viewing HDR content. I'm betting the reviews will confirm this.

Wasn't there a "thing" that if you set the iPhone to max brightness, it wasn't actually max brightness? And max brightness could only be achieved in bright sunlight (as in it went above some kind of user-limit)

Keep in mind that SDR was intended for max 100 nits, and high quality TVs could raise the brightness to 200 nits. So 600 is pretty intense, probably fine in sunlight.

I was hoping it would be a big upgrade outside in the sun for mostly Safari and Reddit browsing. This means no?

The older iPads are also 600 nits - so was hoping for more in sunlight - hoping that it’ll be smart about that!

"Anyone know if the screen is 10-bit or 8-bit?"

I think 8 at the price point. It is not a 12.9 version of the desktop XDR display.

(10 would be a product spec "boast" - if it were so).
