100GB Backup Becomes 1.8TB in TM

My laptop only has 100GB of data out of 256GB SSD. When i execute time machine, it fails saying that it has in sufficient space. I have 2TB TM. I checked the backup status and the TM icon in the laptop shows 1.8TB backing up....whats going on
