I just do a deep test between Handbrake and MacX DVD Ripper. both are free video converter software.

1. HB cant rip encrypted DVD (Need VLC ), MacX DVD Ripper support all type of encrypted or copy-protected DVDs . such as Sony ArccOS, CSS encryption, region protection, UOPs, APS, etc.

2. HB cant read Disney encrypted DVD. Disney new released DVD encrypted with a new DVD copy-protection method called X-Project. Disney new released DVD has 99 titles and the DVD movie size is more than 40 GB (because they modified the file system ). Handbrake will crash when it launch to scan the disc, you can test with Disney DVD "UP".
MacX DVD Ripper has the ability to access all type of encrypted DVD include the new Disney encrypted DVD. It will scan the IFO files and analysis the DVD structures, tell the user which title is the correct
title and rip it to other video formats fast and smooth.

3. MacX DVD Ripper Pro edition gives you a choice to backup DVD to single MPEG-2 file with original Video and original 5.1-channles AC3/DTS Dolby audio. The output MPEG-2 file size will be about 3-5 GB
and the quality is 100% the same as original DVD, because the MacX DVD Ripper will NOT decode and then encode the DVD, but just copy the original DVD Video/Audio data and remux it to a MPEG-2 file. 3-5 GB is
not a big size, you can backup about 30 DVDs in 1 TB hard disk, and you did not need to burn it to DVD disc.
This new DVD backup feature is very useful when you backup DVD to USB disk driver and plug the USB driver to PS3, Xbox or some modern TV set which can play videos from USB interface directly.
Obvious Handbrake did not support this DVD backup feature.
4. Handbrake has some bugs in analyzing DVD navigate instructions, it often gives the user some incorrect title number, but the main title is not show in the title list. So, you cant use Handbrake to
rip those DVDs, thats because the HB use the open source code libdvdread and libdvdnav.
While MacX DVD Ripper active as a real DVD Player, and has no problem read and analyze DVD navigate instructions
5. Handbrake can rip DVD to MPEG-4 and H.264 video such as iPhone iPod. MacX DVD Ripper can rip DVD to 12+ different video formats, also supported Apple iPhone4, iPhone 3GS, iPad, iPod touch and iPod,
MP4, MOV, FLV, MPEG, AVI ( XviD/DivX ) .

MacX DVD Ripper : 180 FPS , 1 Hr. 59 mins DVD take about 19 mins
MacX DVD Ripper : Copy Feature only take about 9 mins.
About the Speed. ( for MacBook Pro 17 )
Result：
Handbrake ：40 FPS , 1 Hr. 59 mins DVD take about 90 mins
MacX DVD Ripper : 120 FPS , 1 Hr. 59 mins DVD take about 28 mins
MacX DVD Ripper : Copy Feature only take about 18 mins.
MacX DVD Ripper is about 3x faster than Handbrake, and 4x real time conversion on Macbook Pro.
8. About the Quality ( for MacBook Pro 17 )
Result： MacX DVD Ripper output mpeg4 video bitrates is 1385 k.
Handbrake : output mpeg4 video bitrates is 980 k
MacX DVD Ripper and Handbrake both has good video quality output.
9. Profile
Handbrake has about 8 profiles built-in, most is related to Apple iPhone and iPod.
MacX DVD Ripper built in aoubt 50+ profiles meet your all of kinds needs.
10. Subtitle, Audio language, extract audio and pictures
