I assume a pwnage tool will be out soon, but in the mean time let us review the current steps to upgrade a currently Jailbroken 4.0 or 4.01 device to 4.1.

1. Install PKGBackup. This will backup Cydia Apps.
2. Install SB Organizer. This in combination with PKGBackup will save your Springboard layout.
3. Use PkgBackup to actually backup.
4. Open iTunes, right click your phone under devices and 'backup'

This next step will preserve your baseband if you are on iPhone 4.

6.You can use TinyUmbrella in combination with iTunes to restore to 4.1 without upgrading your baseband.
7. Once on a fresh install of 4.1, sync with iTunes. Install and Run limera1n
8. Install PkgBackup and restore JB apps.

Anything I am missing? Let me know!

Well I have a question. This will be my first upgrade ever, since using JBme.com to JB my new iPhone 4 that came with 4.01.

Your steps 6 & 7: 1) What does this mean, "You can use TinyUmbrella to restore to 4.1 without upgrading your baseband."

I thought I am updating to 4.1, yet you say "restore to 4.1"

Also you say "Once on a fresh install of 4.1, sync with iTunes".

I thought I use iTunes to install 4.1. If not, where am I getting 4.1 from and how am I installing it?

Thanks

Wait so we can JB 4.1 already ?

Yes

From the above link, it should help clarify what I am saying.

Get the latest TinyUmbrella (4.1.3)
READ THE README TinyUmbrella README NOW Yes. You Read it.
Run TinyUmbrella.
Start TSS Server
Open iTunes
Restore 4.1 (NOT UPDATE) Yes this requires you to download 4.1 Here
Let iTunes error with 1004 error (baseband update failed - we want this :) )
Kick Device Out of Recovery
\o/ -- You are now on 4.1 with 1.59.00 baseband!

Now you do not need to do this, you can just plain old update to 4.1 while also updating your baseband. Now I just chose to add those steps in there for those who chose to keep their current BB.

I suppose if I ever wanted to update my BB in the future I could just restore the phone to a factory 4.1 without Tiny Umbrella running and it would update that way.

After doing all of that, I understand that I have to activate the iphone again. I only have an inactive at&t micro sim, can I activate with that ?

nd can the phone still be unlocked with ultrasn0w if I use the limera1n JB ?

Yes

links were great - i have only 1 question on this one -

"Restore 4.1 (NOT UPDATE) Yes this requires you to download 4.1 Here "

OK so i am downloading 4.1 now - once it is downloaded, what do I do with it?
thanks

It should be made very clear that TU only preserves baseband on the iPhone 4. A 3GS updated to 4.1 cannot currently be unlocked (neither can an iPhone 4 for the updated baseband), so if you're dependent on the unlock, the Dev Team has stated that you need to wait for a PwnageTool update.

This.

OR for the tl;dr crowd.

On Windows:
Hold the SHIFT key while clicking the "Update" or "Restore" button in the iPhone tab in iTunes
On Mac:
Hold the option key while clicking the "Update" or "Restore" button in the iPhone tab in iTunes

Subsequently, a dialog box will come up which will allow you to select the firmware file to use for your update. At this point, simply browse to and select the firmware file that corresponds to the version you'd like to restore your iPhone with.

Duly Noted. Added to OP

I installed PkgBackup and backed up my themes ect, but when I re-jailbroke and installed PkgBackup I didn;t have the option to restore. Any suggestions?

EDIT: NM needed to reboot :p

Going to bump this as a lot of new threads are popping up from people looking to 'upgrade'.

Be aware folks that there are reported apps not working on JB 4.1. I want to be that cool kid with the latest and greatest JB too, but my 4.01 JB is stable enough for one more week.

I know I'm bumping an old(er) thread, but just followed this tutorial and had GREAT SUCCESS! /borat
Only thing I did differently was skip over the SB Organizer and PKGBackup

Thanks guys.

so just to make this clear... after I backup with package backup/sb organizer and back up through itunes, i simply download 4.1 in itunes and install it? then after i do that i use limerain?

I am on the restore part now via downloading it from the tinyumbrella website.

stupid question here...how do you kick the phone out of recovery mode?
