I had read this a while back, but the story I read didn't say it was done with an iPhone.

Best part of looking at that link is the comments though......jeesh some people.

It's a cool project, but 19 miles is far short of space by any of the definitions listed by Wikipedia.

Also, don't be fooled by the apparent curvature of the Earth in the video. It's just a distortion caused by the camera lens, as evidenced by the fact that you can see the same curvature shortly after the launch.

Launching balloons with cameras is actually pretty common. YouTube has a lot more videos like that one.

I believe the iPhone was only involved for the GPS feature, the video was recorded using a different camera.

I think you're correct. But that struck me as odd. With the new iPhone having a quite capable HD recorder, it seems like they could have saved themselves some equipment by just using the iPhone, mounting it in the packing material with the lens facing out.
