New 2.8GHz BTO options in 15" and 17" MBPs

New processor seems to be this one:

Interesting thing...this one was launched in Q3, 2010, whereas the other i7 seems to be released in Q1, 2010.

That's true. I made a thread about these "new" CPUs when they were launched. Just 133MHz faster clock speed, not worth the 200 bucks
But the fact that it's newer technology...would that make a difference in any shape or form? Do you think these ones run cooler than the 2.66 GHz equivalent?
The best buy is still the i5 15 inch.
$2400 for a laptop is crazy for minimal performance gain.
For that $600 difference between the i5 15 inch MPB and the i7, you can probably build yourself a pretty amazing AMD PC that will run circles around that $2400 i7 MBP. So a i7 MBP vs a i5 MBP + PC desktop. The i7 is not worth the money.
edit: or build a $600 hackintosh if you need to run OSX. Just make sure you buy parts that work with OS X.

No, its the same architecture and all, just a higher clock speed, if anything it would run hotter but again you wouldn't really notice since its such a slight speed bump.
Dang my 2.66 isn't the top anymore.
Oh well, I wouldn't have spent an extra $200 on very minimal speed bump anyway. The only reason I went for the i7 was my student discount made in basically a $50 upgrade from the i5 without a discount.

I've been waiting for today to decide on my next laptop. Planning on the 15" MBP with i7 for longevity. 8GB allows me to run Windows in emulation.
Or do I spend 1/2 the money, and just get the, smaller, 11" Mac Air? Not as powerful, but IS cheaper
Or you can just get the 15" i5 (2.4Ghz). Nearly as powerful as the i7, just a tad slower, blows the Air out of the water and still save you $$.

Yep, but look at the low end 15" MBP and high end 13". Also the MacBook is cheaper by $50 from $1749 pre-October.

OMG, Apple is straight up car-jacking people now!!! That $200 price-tag for a 133MHz clock speed-bump is criminal.
True dat, without a doubt now the 15" i5 (2.4GHz) is the best deal until they move on to the Sandy Bridge processor; most likely around April 2011.
How is this any different from ANY BTO processor upgrade they have offered?
They aren't gonna charge $50 more for it, if they did they'd never move any lower-end units.
It's not newer technology. It's the same chip with an extra frequency multiplier that gives the 133MHz speed bump. That is 5.3% difference.
However, this new 640M uses new K0 stepping so Intel was able to add extra clock speed without going over 35W. Although Intel did update other i7-6xx with that stepping so again, it's the same as you can find from 2.66GHz that are currently being sold (assuming Apple uses K0 versions of 620M).
Stepping doesn't affect the performance though
What is going on with the 17"? For one thing it seems to me that the highest-end Macbook Pro ought to have the 2.66 i7 to begin with, but they stuck it with the 2.53 i5. Next they now charge $400 for the 2.8 i7 upgrade!!
