hey people i know im gonna get a huge amount of crap for not searching this first but i need someone to post who has done this before how to make sure EVERYTHING that i had while jailbroken can be restored after i upgrade my iphone from 4.0.1 to 4.2.1.

I am worried because i have a lot of stuff i do not want to loose so it someone were nice enough to give some clear step by step instructions i would be grateful and if i can do this free that would be great too.

Pkgbackup will do it but it's not free. Or install all your stuff back one by one for free.

PkgBackup is really really really iffy. Ive relied on it about 3 times and it all three times it has never worked. IMHO waste of 5 bucks for a false sense of security.

what about the apps i got from installous? Is there a way to back those up?

the apps i download are apps that are no longer available on the app store or are only available in certain countries outside united states.

just take a screenshot of each page of apps. maybe move all your JB apps to one a two pages. then reinstall them thats what I do. make sure you go into winterboard and screenshot that also. you can also go into manage and see what is installed. its all free but takes a little time.

Forgive me to adding to this - but I recall some app that would back up applications I purchased from Cydia being around somewhere - an alternate to pkgbackup.

Apps are ok but how about all that music? Do you have to backup music as well while you jailbreak to 4.2 (when it comes out) it'll be a pain to upload all that music back again!

Ive always had to reupload all my music, and while its a pain and takes a bit, I just sync it and walk away and let it do its thing

What about app settings, can settings/user-data be backed up? Lets say I have an finance app that keeps track of my incomes and expenses and don't have an export function. Is all data lost if I upgrade iOS and have to reinstall the app? No matter if the app is from app store, installous or cydia?

You need use iTunes to backup data. Also you can backup specific data with iFile.

Pkgbackup

If you have problems, I have found that deleting the contact entry prior to hitting backup fixes all my issues. Not in the FAQ.
