i got a iphone 2g and want to turn it into a ipod touch how could i do it i have the there is no sim card installed screen so how can i get pass it and is firmware is 3.1.2

Instead of having to jailbreak and be stuck on a certain firmware, all I did was order a $10 prepaid Sim card from the Telus website. You don't even have to register/activate the sim card, as long as it's from the right phone company for your phone. You put the sim card in, and sync it with iTunes, and the device will be activated and work normally, just minus the phone service. Find out if the phone company your phone is tied to has prepaid sim cards, I'm pretty sure they all do.

That will work with all iphones but the iphone 2G.
With the 2G itunes will make you pick your plan thru itunes before it activates the phone.

So I know this thread is old, but I was doing the same. I have an iPhone 2G that I would like to become an ipod, just for music. I followed the instructions, but I'm stuck here:

I went into Recovery Mode, but nothing happened.. HELP!
