Everyone knows about the normal system alert sounds which are stored at:

/System/Library/Sounds

You know, Basso.aiff Frog.aiff Hero.aiff Pop.aiff Submarine.aiff
Blow.aiff Funk.aiff Morse.aiff Purr.aiff Tink.aiff
Bottle.aiff Glass.aiff Ping.aiff Sosumi.aiff

And you know you can add your own alert sounds to /Users/username/Library/Sounds

What about the other system sounds, like the crumpling paper sound when you empty the Trash, or the 3-note chime when you finish installing a program or burning a disc?

They're located in:

/System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds

Interestingly, there seem to be some sounds in here designed for common situations that Finder doesn't ever use (at least in my experience). There's a file called move to trash.aif in the "finder" folder that isn't actually used by Finder when you use the Move to Trash right-click menu item. I've also never heard the Volume Unmount.aif in the "system" folder.

And why are burn complete.aif and burn failed.aif the exact same sound?

In any case, it seems like it would be a simple matter just to create your own sounds, rename them to whatever.aif and put in place of the OS X system sounds.

brb, trekking out my mac
