Zone free DVD player ?

My DVD player will only let me play zone 4 (australia) discs,
I have 40, zone 1 (america) DVDs I want to play.

How can I make the DVD player zone free ?

I'd suggest making DVD "backup"s that are region-free (through software such as MacTheRipper). All DVD players will play discs for Region 0, which equates to no regionality at all, really.

P.S. Are the DVDs in NTSC? You use PAL, right?

Many DVD players can be upgraded simple to be region free. My region 2 Phillips DVD player from Blockbuster just needed turning on, open draw, power off, power on, press 0, repeat and hey presto region free.

Are the DVDs in NTSC? You use PAL, right?

In Australia we use PAL but my Imac DV+ is NTSC and PAL compatable,
however it will not play any zone other than zone 4 .

also MPW mine was built into my Imac DV+ so I don't know what it is.

if the machine's out of warranty/applecare warranty (this voids any warranty), you can flash the drive's firmware. it's now pretty safe, and just resets the drive to RPC1 instead of RPC2 - meaning you need still to set the region when watching DVDs, but instead of five resets you can reset it as many times as you like, using a program such as Region X.

that'd be the best bet, it's the most convenient.
