I have a Sony Handycam 550v that shoots in 1080interlaced. I also take countless video with my iPhone (which are progressive). So I have many clips between the two.
What I'm looking for is the best workflow for my AVCHD video now that iMovie supports it natively. Using the old iMovie I imported the video directly but iMove would convert to the Intermediate Codec at 960x540 progressive. This always bothered me since I paid so much for the camera and was only utilizing 1/4 the resolution. I have some shots now that I'd like to maintain as much resolution as possible so keeping 1080 would be ideal. So I am looking for the best workflow to maintain resolution coming from an interlaced 1080 AVCHD stream. Should I deinterlace prior to importing? Or deinterlace on export? or how do I go about getting the highest possible resolution from my interlaced video? I've read some workflows that say to use JES Deinterlacer as the first step before import but those were a little dated and it seems to me that there should be a better way.
Any pointers or best practices would be helpful.
