When I attach my 3TB external Western Digital Essentials USB3.0 3TB to my brothers macbook pro 2010, then the mac becomes really slow and after about 20 minutes crashes (need to restart).
The external drive is NTFS formated, 2TB used (800gb free).
On my macbook 2008, also running lion, it works like a charm.
Tuxera NTFS drivers installed as well as WD turbo drivers (both macs).
I can't think of anything that is different between these two macs.
Here is the crazy part:
When I open preferences, spotlight, and add the 3TB drive to the private settings, so that it doesn't get indexed, then I can go through all folders on the drive. If I click on the drive in finder, all I get is a little loading symbol at the bottom right corner of the finder window.
See attached image for the Activity Monitor. I took more screenshots as it approached 10GB of Virtual memory, but it seems like they all got deleted when the mac crashed...typical.
