New 13" MBP without 7200 rpm option

Hi all,

Does anyone know why apple don´t offer 7200rpm hard disks on the new 13" MBP?

I know that it will create more heat and drain the battery faster than a 5400rpm disk but I need the speed for recording audio in Logic Pro.

Is it not recommended to install one? Will it die if I install one? What is the reason?

That's not necessarily true. Some 7200 drives consume less power and create less heat than some 5400 drives. It really depends on the individual brands and models. You can put any compatible drive in that you choose. It doesn't have to come from Apple. Finally, your battery life is dependent on many more factors than simply what drive you are using.

No, because Apple has not explained why they do not offer a 7200 RPM drive in the 13".

That said, I have installed a Seagate Momentus 750 GB 7200 RPM drive in mine (base 2.3) and it works fine.

For the same reason they don't offer you a 15" display on the 13" MBP.

That really doesn't make sense, there's no reason that they couldn't offer it. I think it's probably because the 13" are more prone to vibration caused by a faster drive than the 15" are.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't use them, I think apple is just trying to prevent whining about it. I think it makes perfect sense, as my unibody 13" vibrates quite a bit more with a 7200 RPM drive than it did with the stock one.

Which 7200 RPM drive do you have? Having put the 750 GB 7200 Seagate in, I can feel the computer vibrating under me, to the point that I may return it.
