Rewind about one and a half years. I had a late '08 MBP which was, until that point, working perfectly.

I do travel quite a bit, however my computer is always in its hardshell protective case.
So, everything should be OK?

No. The optical drive went. It wouldn't read discs at all. There was no clicking or anything; you'd slot in a CD and it would just stay there. It was completely dead.
Luckily, my warranty was still active as it was only six months old. Apple replaced it quickly and it was working again.

Fast forward to today. I try to install software on the MBP, and it sucks in the disc, thinks about it, then promptly spits it out. I tried the disc on another IDENTICAL MBP (optical drive's never failed in that one.. ) and it worked, so it's definitely not the disc.

I tried resetting the PRAM, as I had this issue once before, however to no avail.
I am now no longer in warranty and don't fancy forking out for however much a new SuperDrive is.

Are there any alternative (cheap) external drives, which can burn CDs? Or at very least read DVDs?

And has anyone else shared my optical drive woes?...

(I'm in half a mind to get a MBA next time I upgrade  )
