Please give me some advice.
As you can see in my sig, I have the 128GB stock SSD. This speed will work until I can upgrade it next year. But I'm worried about 128GB being enough space for my iTunes Library + iPhone + iPad backups, etc. Not to mention all the graphic design files I work on throughout the semester.
I'm considering the Data Doubler from OWC (similar to the Optibay). But I can't decide on the HDD that will go inside.
I prefer WD drives over Seagate, as I've had better luck with them over the years, but haven't used Seagate since the early 2000s. Though Seagate has a Hybrid drive that is supposed to be pretty fast, and I don't believe WD offer these yet. But my SSD will be doing the heavy loading of the OS, CS5 and other apps, etc. This secondary drive would be for media files, so would it be a considerable improvement with the 4GB SSD Hybrid 7200rpm over the non-Hybrid versions? I've also read that the firmware needs to be updated on these models, but this is difficult to do on OS X. Anyone have experience with this?
If I don't go with the Hybrid then I'll go with a WD drive. But should I go with 5400rpm or 7200rpm? I am concerned about the potential for higher heat output, louder sound, and reduced battery life of a 7200rpm drive. But if you guys advise me that these concerns are unfounded, then I'd probably appreciate the performance of a 7200rpm drive, right? It would be primarily for storing various media files and iTunes libraries and backups. I'll probably store a few of my Steam games on there and load them onto the SSD when I want to play them. Speed isn't super important on this secondary drive, but would be nice if the cons against it were low.
So please, tell me what you think?
