i5 basic work, pretty quiet. Noise is relatively nonexistent, except when you're typing of course.

0 being no noise and 10 being a hair dryer:

basic work (internet / text editing): 0 / 10 (cannot hear it at all, even if I lean in close)

hard work (playing Starcraft 2): 4/10 if speakers are off, 1/10 if speakers are on.

I have the 13" i7...

Basic work = 2/10,very quiet, but noticeable.
web surfing/music

Hard work =8/10,very loud close to sounding like a hairdryer.
include gaming

+1. I also have the i5 and the only time I hear a noise is when I first turn it on and the HD boots up. After that its as silent as it comes.

Perception of sound is extremely subjective. This is pretty tough to do. One person's "unbearable" is someone else's "you kidding, that's it?".
