Behind you
I was hoping someone had some bench tests for the disks shipping in the 15 and 17" 2011 MBP

I don't think the difference is large enough to be noticeable. None of the major numbers change: seek time, random read/write performance, power usage.

To get a real jump, you need to go the SSD route.

In my experience, 7200rpm is a little louder and a little faster.
Id stick with 5400rpm until SSD prices drop a lot.

I would defiantly go with the 5400PRM, unless you follow aibo82's advice. I ordered the 7200RPM myself, but I think it's too noisy and not worth that little extra speed.

So now I have to find another harddrive and either use my 7200RPM as external harddrive or sell it. I wished I took the 5400RPM now.

aibo82, will the noise be the same with Momentus or will it be lower than the Apple provide? They are both 7200RPM, so I am a little worried it will.

My happy experience with Apple and 7200

just got my 15" base a few day ago, then did what I always do with my macs: rip off the 4 gb ram and put on an 8 gb upgrade (it costed me less then a BTO) ;), took the 5400 off, put it in a cheap case to become a BU disk and stuck in a great WDC WD5000BEKT-75KA9T0 (that I stripped from my previous MB) :D.
I find this HD very silent (I can't hear it over the purring of the 2 fans spinning at 2000 rpm) and rather fast.

If you do it this way you don't have to wait for a BTO and usually get 2 HDs at the price of 1.

Get the cheapest... I just switched my stock HD by a 500gb 7200rpm and it's 50€ so you can always switch it afterwards

I decided to go with the 5400 instead of the 7200 as theres not really much in it I dont think. Unless your going to be doing alot of video editing I cant see there being an issue. Even then would it be stored to an external drive anyway.
