Hi guys,
Been using a late 2008 15" unibody MBP 2.53, 4GB and nVidia 9600m 512mb since around Nov/Dec 2008. Had been feeling the urge to upgrade for awhile, and recently ordered one of the new 17" MBP and am eagerly await delivery on that. That said, I've been looking into what fair value would be selling this one (currently living in Spain, if that matters).
An important consideration (I think) is that in the last few weeks I've noticed the heat the machine produces, even idling, to have ratcheted up considerably. This seemed to begin after a forced power down during a gaming session in bootcamp (presumably due to overheating); since then I've been noticing temperatures (in OSX) when doing light tasks around 60-70 C (perhaps 10 higher than the average before), although this shoots up to the 80s or 90s once I do anything intensive (video editing, games). While high heat was normal before doing intensive tasks, graphics intensive programs really seem to chug now; SCII used to cruise at around 25-30FPS on my chosen settings, and now is around 15FPS and the laptop is incredibly hot. It seems likely there is something very wrong with either the fan, thermal paste, or GPU all of a sudden. Thoughts on likely causes would be appreciated so I can advertise fairly.
I'm not particularly concerned about repairing it, since I have a new rig arriving any day. Warranty is expired and I'm just wondering what the likely cause is, and how much I might fairly ask for this machine when reselling it? At this point I'm only interested in selling it to try and recoup some share of the price of my new machine. Although graphics intensive programs seem to drag, typical day to day applications are still very zippy/no problem.
Thanks for any thoughts.
