I was just wondering what were the odds, if it was possible, or if there were any rumors about this happening?

No.

Look for it, though, in the 2012 model when it supports LTE and Verizon is using VoLTE. It's supported on that.

CDMA doesn't support it unless they use an SVDO capable chipset. The Verizon phone is already using the chipset that both ATT & Verizon will be using in the iPhone 5 (both supported by a single Qualcomm chipset) so it wont be getting SVDO this summer.

Unless Apple drops an LTE bombshell in June, which almost everyone deems unlikely since neither ATT or Verizon have market dominance with LTE yet over their 3G networks, its pretty much a 2012 thing.

SVDO needs TWO chipsets running at the same time - one for CDMA1X, one for EVDO.

Double the cost.

Additional battery drain.

Valuable PCB real estate taken up.

Potential/Probable RF performance issues (IM, desense, etc.)

It's certainly not just "a firmware" upgrade.

I read somewhere that they were looking into some type of workaround that would magically enable this on the current 3g network. Not sure how that is possible but hey. LTE will resolve this issues and thus level the playing field. Then each carrier can go back to bitching about coverage.

iPhone 5 on GSM only? Really???

Most I've talked to, within Verizon, all swear that talk and text is coming to iPhone 5

Nope. Not unless Apple throws in last second LTE support.

The chip that's currently in the iPhone4 for Verizon is the chip they're using in the iPhone 5 (Qualcomm CDMA/GSM support). It does not support SVDO. In fact none of their dual chips do so the only way to do it for CDMA is with LTE support (especially since Verizon is going to VoLTE). It's pretty much common thought that LTE isn't coming until the 2012 summer version of the iPhone.

As far as Rep's "being sure"... they don't have the slightest. I spent over 5yrs in the Cell industry, and reps dont get phone release info until VERY near the announcement date (or on it for high profile handsets). Anything they're saying is just speculation of people. Since Apple is notorious for closely guarding that stuff and they hold almost all the cards for the iPhone you can bet nobody knows a damn thing right now at Verizon except maybe a few people who handle dealings with Apple directly (for both security of info, and the fact it's not something announced yet).

So... no talk/surf for Verizon until 2012 unless Apple provides LTE support for this summer's phone (again which almost all sources point towards no).

Can an LTE iPhone be used overseas?

Chances are that there wont even be a new Verizon iPhone this year. The next iPhone version will more than likely be only for GSM carriers.

The sky isn't blue, it's brown. I love making up my own facts.
