I remember using OS9 on my grand father's old G3 iMac and was pretty excited when OS X was released.

I was not taken back enough to buy my own Mac until 10.4 (Intel) was out and I purchased a 20" iMac C2D and have never looked back.

Now I've switched my own family over to the Mac and happily spend my evenings on my 27" i5 iMac!

Most importantly, what version of OS X made you switch to the Mac?

10.4 for me! :)

I switched over and almost immediately started using the public beta (pre 10.0) version as my daily OS at home.

Edit: I voted 10.0 as that was the closest option

10.2

I had used OS 9 while doing a Photoshop course and hated it with a passion. I had to use another Mac about a year later and it was running OS X which was good enough to persuade me to get my first Mac. :)

I started using Macs with a PowerPC G3 working with OS9, but I bought my first own mac, an iBook G4, with 10.3 Panther in it.

10.5 Leopard. I was seriously considering switching during the Tiger era, but at that time still needed Windows for a couple of things. Once Leopard with its Boot Camp feature was released, I switched as soon as I could afford it.

Luckily, that moment was very soon in coming, thanks to a change in employment. My first iMac (aluminum 20" C2D) had Tiger pre-installed and a Leopard drop-in disc.

First exposure, OS "Classic". First time "messing around" was OS 9. Actual usage was on 10.4 through a Hackintosh which made me officially switch to Mac.

I voted 10.2 because that's when I switched to OS X from OS 9.

I was always a mac user though; considered myself a "power user" with OS 7 when I was in Elementary School lol

I had a Quadra with OS 8.something that I "tinkered" with. I have been tinkering with Linux since 1998 so when I realized OS X had unix underneath, I knew it could work very well for me, but I couldn't bring myself to spring for a Mac until the Mini came out. I began phasing in a Mac as my main machine when I picked up a G4 Mac Mini running 10.4.

By the time Leopard came out, we had shut down the last windows box and everybody was running OS X. I even pried open my G4 Mini so I could add RAM and get it to run Leopard. There were several windows boxes sold off at garage sales and set out on the curb. Actually we still have two of them sitting around. One is running Ubuntu 10.something and the other is collecting dust in the basement and our son uses it from time to time. Now every machine is on Snow Leopard but the G4 that is stuck at Leopard but still running nicely.

10.4, however it wasn't technically my Mac. It was a friend's who left it at my house and then promptly went and died.

The first Mac I bought had 10.5.

I'm probably one of the few that stuck with Apple since I can remember.

My parents had a Performa 475 with System 7.1 on it, and I later purchased an iMac in late 1998 with OS 8.5 installed. I've had many Macs after that, but never owned a PC.

My first MacOS was System 6.0.1. If I "switched" from anything, it was from CP/M. The first computer purchase was a Macintosh IIcx that ran System 6.0.4.

I've always been a Mac person and, although I voted for 10.0, my first experience with OS X was actually Rhapsody (Mac OS X Server 1.0). My school was running an AppleShare server and while they were trying to figure out how to transition to a newer system I got to play around with it one of those new G3 towers :). Needless to say, it was a bit of a shock to the system.

Just getting out of the service my first Mac came with OS 9. Then a good old friend showed the OS X beta to me and helped me to get a 10.0 beta disk. I absolutely loved it and thought it was great the when 10.1 came out I could just take the 10.0 disk to the local Apple store (It just opened) and at the door a worker would hand out 10.1 disk if you showed a 10.0 beta disk. :D

the comp or your friend died?

if it was your friend, wouldnt you give it to family?

I think you meant 'switch to Mac OS X' in the title.

System 7
system 8
system 9, 9.2
OS X 10.2 and up.

My friend died and I did offer it back to her parents but they didn't want it. I don't think they know much about computers and felt I'd put it to better use.

10.3 on a Rev A iMac G5. Until a few weeks ago I used that machine daily as my iTunes server for my Apple TV. But then it started making loud clicking noises and I just shut it off. When I get some time, I will see if I can bring it back to life.
