I am having a similar problem, but with only one of the hinges. It leaves a black mark on the inside felt side of the cover when it lays up against the hinge. I'm considering stopping by the Apple Store this afternoon to show it to them and ask if it is normal. When I detach the cover from my iPad 2, I also notice that there is a black mark on my iPad. It wipes away, but almost seams like grease from the hinge. Hoping that I can find a cover with 2 good hinges that don't do this.
I had this happen with my red leather cover. After a week the hinges looked like this and had the same marks on the iPad and inside the cover.

I took it into my apple store and they swapped it right away 🙂
Yeah mine are starting to look like that now. Did they say what the cause was? Are you still having that problem or has a new cover solved it?
Mine has that. Gray smart cover. Isn't this normal wear and tear? For Christ's sake, should that be a "trade it in for a new one" issue? Picky, picky.
That looks terrible (but nice nails though)! Make a Genius Bar appointment and go to your local Apple store and they should replace it.Posted this already on the iPad/smart cover color thread.
So irritated, I couldn't find my receipt for best buy and well, we all know best buys crappy service.

I stopped by the Apple Store on my way home and they gave me a new smart cover without any issues. The Genius said this was the first time he had seen the defect, but that definitely should not be happening. I had a green poly cover and exchanged for the same one.
