Huh? Do these things happen to MACS?

Guys, a few days ago I had the same problem as this guy, who started the thread which I linked above. I had gone for a five-day vacation. When I returned, I opened my G5 and during startup, saw a serious kernel panic. It happened even before the computer shows the login window! BlAck screen, white letters, and endless numbers! I closed the computer by holding down the power button, and after this, I started the computer and it was OK.

But now, I have one problem. I cannot start the Mac Help from the Finder. I mean, I can see the help of other programs, but not the help from the Finder! When I press "Mac Help" from the menu, the Help Viewer quits immediately after leunch, showing nothing, not even a crash message!

I repaired permissions... nothing
I used macsweeper to update prebindings.... nothing
I reseted PRAM... nothing again.

WHAT CAN I DO? Will I have to reinstall my system all over again? Or there is any other way?

My system is a Dual G5 2.5 Ghz, Mac OS X 10.3.8, 1gbyte RAM and Radeon 9600XT.

Please help
 
Try going to your home folder>Library>Preferences.

Move the file:
com.apple.help.plist

to the Trash. Don't empty it.

You may have to restart the Mac and then try the Finder Help.
If that works, chuck the file.
 
Problem Fixed. Thanks guys.

But I would like to say that during restart of my system, I ended up again in a kernel panic (yes, the one with the black screen and those endless characters keeping going on through my screen). Any idea why this happened?

I've had more kernal panics since installing 10.3.8 than I ever had in the preceding period of using 10.3.4 (quite a few months).

My Mac doesn't seem to play so nicely with USB flash devices now... still usable but it sometimes gets into a tizzy.

Me too! Until 10.3.8 I have had no kernel panics. After 10.3.8, i had 2!

No such file exists at this location. Could you be more specific?
 
I've got to add that since updating to 10.3.8 I too have had several Kernal panics on my usually stable PowerMac. Hopefully this will be resolved in 10.3.9.
 
Wait. Are you sure it's a kernel panic? My old iMac used to randomly boot up verbosely (press command-v on startup) even when I didn't make it. Sometimes it booted up in console mode but not single user. As in it gave me a login prompt. This was all white text on black screen. Maybe that's what your computer is doing?

edit: I didn't read the link in the original post. Ignore what I said. =)
