In my 17" 2011 2,3ghz I7 Macbook pro with an OCZ vertex 3, boot times have been improved for three seconds with the last apple's update (may 4th) going from 18 to 15 seconds. And now, the rolling loading circle doesn't even appear below the apple logo in the boot up screen as it used to appear rolling two or three times before the update. It just loads instanctly after the apple logo appears.

With AJA System Test, Xbench, and DiskSpeedTest, transfer speeds seems to remain the same.

I made all the fixes berofe the upgrade, smc and pr resets, fixing the last apple upgrade with these commands
sudo chown root:admin /
sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
sudo kextcache -system-caches, and the faster I could get was 18 seconds. Now after the update It boots faster (I also entered the above commands in terminal after the upgrade).

This are only speculations, but I think that this improvement can be seen as software fix for the problems of interference that the 17" 2011 macbook pros have been suffering between the sata 6 cable and the battery indicator cable.

I'm seeing the same thing with my 2011 13" MBP and Intel 510 SSD.

Previously the grey circle would do two or three loops before going to the login sequence. Now you have to watch closely to even see the grey circle. It briefly appears and does about half a circle before booting.

I did an XBench test and see about the same speeds as before though.

You can say that I am crazy, but I feel everything a lot faster after the update. It restarts in 15 seconds, the same as a normal boot!!

Same here. 17" MBP 8,3; Crucial M4 256GB boot disk, OWC 240GB in optibay. :D

Me too, i have a owc ssd and i see no spinning wheel and it boots up super fast :):D:D:D:D

Mine actually went up 1 second T.T

EDIT:

Nevermind, just tried it and and boot time decreased by three! 18 --> 15 second for me as well. Running an Intel 320 on a 2011 MBP

Hmm looks like gfxcardstatus isn't working now. It's gonna need an update.

Nvm, maybe it was just glitchy seems to work.

This update breaks the TRIM enabler. Make sure you run TRIM enabler again after the update or you'll lose TRIM support!

I have an Intel X25-M 120gb in my 17" 2011 MBP, with TRIM enabled, and I also don't get any spinning wheels. Great update. Too bad no 6gb/s magic fix for the optibay, but it was a long shot.

Wirelessly posted (Johnny iphone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8G4 Safari/6533.18.5)

Just fine the update- ssd owc merc extreme sata3

Boot time increased 14-18secs!!

Will play around tomorrow an re-enable trim to c if it gets my boot times back to what they where

I swear my remaining battery estimates went up after installing this update. Prior to it I was seeing at best 4.5 hours on the estimated time remaining. It always bothered me a little bit but I never worried or looked too hard to find the culprit (if it's an application or background process). After updating, i've seen the estimate go as high as 9 hours with an average of around 7.

And just to stay on topic, my boot times remained about the same but they were always good anyhow :p

Same results here as the OP.

Intel X-25 Gen II. No spinning loading thing at all during boot-up.

Very impressive.

For boots, are you guys clocking it from power on to the login screen, or are you just not using a password?

i'm not timing anything.

I push the power button from OFF...apple logo pops up...then I'm at my desktop (no login screen).

In the past, I'd see at least a few rotations of that loading circle below the Apple logo during boot. No longer. So I suppose it's 3 or 4 seconds faster now. Not particularly significant, but still cool.

Does anyone know what they did? Was there any disclosure to this?

This is rather a substantial alteration. All of us with SSDs , that wheel is gone forever.

Long live the wheel :)

i also have noticed slightly quicker boot times with my 120gb apple ssd. i didnt record and before/after times, but i went from 2.5 gear spins to .5 gear spins. sometimes it doesnt even show up at all! im happy:D

Sweet, looking forward to installing the updates (second attempt). Redownloading them isn't normally an issue, except with super slow Internet. I dunno if my first download was corrupted but neither the EFI update or the Software Update wanted to install, I'll keep my fingers crossed it works and I get faster boot times :D
