the sound is ok on my new iMac

and i'm considering investing some money in order to get some good 2.1 speakers

all reviews are giving good grades to most kits but it's quite difficult to compare them

i was wondering which you would recommend (my use: movies and music)

in an affordable price range:

- JBL Creature III black
- Bose Companion 3

and in a less affordable price range:

- Bowers & Wilkins MM1
- Focal XS

thanks

i kind of hate Logitech, it reminds me my PC past...

Creative, Logitech... awful design, my iMac deserves better ;)

I’ve heard decent things about Harman Kardon Soundsticks. Maybe take a look at those?

Scratch Bose it is a piece of...... have you considered Swan? also M audio has some nice sets. I've never heard the MM1s but they are supposed to be pretty good for the size.. The Focal are a little ugly comared to the MM1 so just stick to B&W if you want to drop the big bucks or get a nice pair of swans.

What people say about Bose isn't true...but don't believe what I or they say, go to a shop and check them out yourself.

I used to have the Bose, they weren't bad. They were actually pretty good. But I don't use em anymore on my desk cause the gsm interference drove me crazy.

For now- I'm back using my old Klipsch ProMedia 2.1. They're great.

Now this is really ridiculous. Talking about Bose being crap and simultaneously recommending Swan's? Swan's are design only speakers which sound absolutely horrible (presuming you're talking about the usual 2.1 speaker set). Even the majority of Swan owners will confirm this.

Edit: M10's is what I'm speaking of. They fit in the OP's price range. There really are better choices than these.

i've heard good stuff about the soundsticks, but the dome and the speakers would take too much space on my desk

i should go try the bose companion 3 and the MM1

but i was hoping for owners' feedbacks

thx

If you're considering the Companion 3's and MM1's I would defiantly say check out the Companion 5's as they are cheaper than the MM1's and I believe have a better sound, and are defiantly a lot better than the Companion 3's. The MM1's produce a very true sound, as do the Bose, except the Bose have the added flexibility of the sub and simulated surround sound. It really depends what type of sound you are after so defiantly go to a shop and compare the two. I feel you get more for your money with the Bose compared to the B&W. Of course, many "audiophiles" would disagree with this.

M-Audio AV40s get great reviews... I had the BOSE Companion 2 Series II, and they were "ok", and then swapped them out for M-Audio AV30s and noticed a huge difference.

My vote would definitely go to the AudioEngine A5. They're a fantastic powered speaker. I noticed you wrote that you were looking for a 2.1 setup; with the A5's right in front of you there isn't really a need for a separate sub. Bass extension is quite good, and the soft dome tweeter isn't harsh. You can find them online for ~$300 in black; though I've seen deals for both the black & white putting them under that figure.

The soundsticks are extremely good value. There is better that's for sure, but for their price they're really impressive (and I'm anal when it comes to sound).

the sound is probably good but the design is terribly ugly

guys, i have a nice iMac, not a PC ;)

I've never tried the M10s but I recently got a 2.0 set of swans and they are very good for the price.. it beats any bose set and they are really decent for $130 (I got the D1010 MK II a 2.0 system)

just tried the Focal XS this week, the sound is awesome, so is the price :p

better than Bose but i listened to music only, haven't tried watching movies (in the store)

soundsticks 3 have an awesome sound for all kinds of use

but the glowing light in the dark is getting me on my nerve
