What is ipad made for?

Hi everybody!
I see that ipads are very popular but what can people use it for? im a writer and an animator i know that i can do sketches with it, do storyboards and even the simplest animations if im travelling or something and dont have a computer. but using it just a few times a year is no good. i dont want to play games with it(except the angry birds of course ) or watch movies. my father uses galaxy tab for checking email and nothing else. i use macbook at home and im sure people dont use it as a replacement computer at home(surfing the net etc). of course its good to use in bed.. year.. haha. its also rather too big to carry with yourself everywhere to use it outside.
what do all you use it for?

I seriously wonder why you feel the need to post on this board? You rarely have a single positive thing to say, so I'm guessing your only goal in life is to bash Apple.

As for the OP, people never seem to grasp the full effect of the iPad, until the have an iPad. It's as if your eyes were closed and now they are opened. The sheer amount of apps that are applicable to what you need or want to do is astounding.

I use my iPad for various things, from making video calls, to creating short movies from trips I take across Europe, photo editing, reading books and full color magazines, watching movies (to include avi and mkv video files I rip from DVD's), surfing the web, logging into my MacBook Pro with Splashtop and doing anything it can do, etc...

The reason the iPad is such a hit is because of everything it can do, not because it can't view Flash adverts. But if you need to view a specific Flash based website, you can either use iSwifter or Splashtop. Easy to get around the whole Flash debate.

For me, it's an ereader, a magazine, a newspaper, a TV, a movie/music player, a game console, a notepad, a web browser, and a web chat device. I'm not sure what else to expect out of it.

Agreed--I don't "surf" the app store much on my iPhone, but I am constantly browsing in it on my iPad and every time I do, something new amazes me--and it's almost always something free.

We use ours as a Magazine reader, book reader, Ipod. I control my home entertainment center with it. we use the DJay program when we just want to have fun and send music around the home. We control our Sirius Satellite radio with it. We have garage band for our 2.5 year old grandson to start playing and learning music. We check the weather, e-mail, surf the web. My wife starts her college papers on it. she takes notes in class that have the audio sync'd with the typed or drawn notes for easy playback. We use it as a self changing picture frame at parties. We stream video to the tv with it sometimes.

Seriously the uses are endless, it is one of the most useful devices in our home.

To get a feel go to the app store, it will show you thousands of ways you never dreamed of.

We do not play games on it but I read that iOS is now the number one portable game platform in terms of sales, and quantity of games available.

I use it for checking emails, browsing, reading newspapers, reading large reports, giving presentations....it definitely wouldn't replace a computer and I wouldn't buy it if I couldn't afford to sink the money in, but all in all I'm delighted i got one, a superb little tool! I travel a lot and no longer have to bring my big laptop around with me, if I expect to do lots of typing I bring a blutooth keyboard in my suitcase.

seriously, i wouldnt mind some playing, surfing if i dont have a computer nearby or travelling, i dont read much, and i would watch it connected to tv(dont want to buy tv). so, lets see, i play an hour a week, i can still connect my macbook to tv and i usually have a computer nearby to do some surfing. totally useless thing for most people..
i just have some money and thinking what can i do with it . i tried ipad in a shop and its really great thing to play with. but worthless for person who travel only 2-4 times a year.

Absolutely correct. The best thing is that the iPad is so light & portable but with a large enough screen that one can easily bring it everywhere & enjoy Pr0n for a long, long time before needing to find a power outlet to recharge due to the excellent long life battery!

Yes it is obviously useless, because you can do all of these things on something else you probably own.

The iPhone is also useless! What does the iPhone do? Makes calls, sends SMS. A £5 mobile phone can do this! Then I have a laptop for everything else it does.

The MacBook is useless! What does it really do that a standard laptop can't do!?

In actual fact what does a laptop do that a desktop can't do? I can pick up a desktop PC for $300!

Hang on! What do my D&G jeans do that my crappy supermarket jeans don't do!? They both keep my legs warm but the supermarket ones are a fraction of the price!

What is it for? You know all of the stuff you do on your computer that doesn't involve a keyboard? Mostly the stuff that you're scrolling with, or reading, or just passively sitting back and watching?

That's what the iPad is for. I have an iMac (for my main computer with all of my files), a MacBook Air (for school to actually do some work on, essentially like a netbook with dropbox), an iPhone (phone calls), and I'm getting an iPad in about a week. And each has it's own place in my digital lifestyle with a very specific purpose and a functionality that none of the others can replace.

Essentially, the entire purpose of it is for those passive activities on your computer that you do. It becomes a more "personal" way to do the things that aren't considered "work."

The iPad isn't for everyone, and nobody, including Apple has said that it is
If you have to search for a reason, then it prolly isn't for you

I use mine for work a lot:

Always have my notes with me (Evernote)
Always have my docs and presentations with me (GoodReader, DropBox)
I can make presentations to clients impressively on the spot
Replaces my pad and pen for meetings
I can even sketch on it (Penultimate)
Emails of course

When I travel, I have my movies and music, and Netflix
When I go to the gym, I have my books to read on the treadmill
I can keep up with my RSS feed at lunch (River of News)

I have access to my Mac at home for whatever I need (Logmein Ignition)

I don't have to lug around my laptop or remember to take a book, DVD or anything
I just pick up my iPad and I can do anything I need to do for work or pleasure

Sure, I can do most of that from my iPhone, but...
The battery lasts an insanely long time
The screen is much bigger for presentations and such
The typing experience is easier for emails and docs

If you don't need one... that's cool
But nobody should knock others that do use their's in a meaningful way
We each have our own experiences, needs and wants
One size doesn't fit all
Nobody should have to justify to someone else why they have an iPad

The iPad is a toy.
A very nicely made toy. (Yes, I own one).
But it is not a productive tool — unless you only do the most basic of word processing while checking emails — and of course web browsing.

Get one if you want another toy, but not if you are looking to use it as a full featured computer.

Of course, some posters here at MR would have you believe you need little else computingwise…
I remain unconvinced.

im not an apple hater. just lets see, macbook makes use of computer more um.. enjoyable? but surfing the net IS more enjoyable on bigger screen of laptop. right? yup, connecting ipad to tv is better then laptop. completely agree. i prefer printed books. then ones on small screen. maybe will change my mid if try. and i really dont know much about apps. but just guessing that they are not something really worthy.
but where is ipad more enjoyable then macbook? im just afraid of buying something that i wont need. returning in russia is much harder since theres no apple store. but i do want one .

When you don't want to break out the laptop, wait for it to turn on, launch whatever application you want to access. The iPad allows for easier accessibility to certain functions without the headache of a laptop.

As one example... I'm sitting on the couch watching tv and see a commercial that interests me enough to want to go to their website. Before I got my iPad, I'd have to think, "do I want to grab my laptop, turn it on, wait for it to boot up, launch the browser, and go to the website? Am I that motivated?" After I got my iPad I simply grab it, hit the browser and type the URL.

Call me lazy if you want, but that is a much more enjoyable experience in my eyes.
