Or you could just open the pdf screen capture in Preview and File/Export... it to whatever format you prefer.

I use an app called Kunvert (http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/9687). I have it set up so I get my screenshot file in PDF format, then from the Finder I right-click on it and choose "Open With..."> Kunvert. And *poof* I have a JPEG file. (The contextual menu option may be "Open Using..."--I'm on Windows at work right now.) That way, when I want a PDF, I leave it alone, and when I want a JPEG, I don't have to go into any app to convert it.
This is what I do. I like the choice of PDF by default for one simple reason (even though I never use the PDF version): PDF doesn't compress the image/compresses the image losslessly. This means that all I lose in quality when converting to JPEG or what-have-you is normal loss associated with whatever format I choose. I keep the PDF around just in case I decide to switch formats. For those curious about a change to PNG in Tiger rather than some other format, I think there are two reasons why this format was chosen:IJ Reilly said:

Good points there. I already use PNGs for similar reasons at work (on Windows) so why not at home with screen shots? Turns out Kunvert (link to actual product page) can convert images to PNG among other formats. I'll be switching my settings this evening.
