How to make file hidden?

How can you make a file hidden? just like in windows.

Put a Period symbol in front of the first letter of the file name.

I just tried that with a .txt file and got this message:

Maybe some like the free application Hidden Files might help.

If you really want encryption then look no father than Espionage.
