DVD Region Problems

Hi

I work in a internet cafe in South-Africa and earlier today a girl came in looking for support on her Apple Mac. It was so busy in the shop that she sort of dissapeared in the crowd and I feel bad that I couldnt give her help. Im now looking for help to give it to her 2morrow at her work.

I dont know what Apple she has but she has Mac OS 10. She has a DVD player and shes looking for ways to get around the region restrictions. I think she changed it 4 times and now its stuck on the wrong region or something. I dont know Macs at all so is there anyone who maybe knows how to remove the restrictions for this region thing. I know there is a way, with computers there always is and always will be. I will appreciate it greatly.

There are a couple of ways to attack this. I'm not sure how they'll work as I've never used an out of region DVD.

1. Update the firmware for her DVD drive to make it region free. Beware, I've heard stories of people frying their drives. Also, it voids the warranty.

2. If the DVD mounts, use Mac the Ripper to rip the region coding off of the DVD (as well as the Macrovision). This is time-consuming and she'll use up lots of HD space with various VIDEO_TS folders.

3. I think VLC can play DVDs without checking for the region. It's just that VLC's interface isn't as nice as Apple's DVD Player application.

BTW, she's probably a really cute girl for you to go to all of this trouble.

I just feel bad that I couldnt help her at that point, she left in a akward moment, and I couldnt help her at that point, more a mind of professionalism over personal feeling, but anyway.

I really wouldn't try to use the firmware upgrade. I'd be scared to use it myself. Last resort kind of thing. You can do a search in these forums or a Google search for what you need.

As for VLC, the above poster listed the site. You could also try versiontracker.com to find it.
