TextEdit and Preview suddenly aren't working anymore.

I deleted the preferences of the apps, rebooted a few times, but no change. They bounce a few times, then disappear followed by the error:

"Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple."

Any ideas?

Any clues in the report it sends to Apple or in the system log? It should generate a crash report at least.

Simple fix for the Preview and TextEdit Crash after Lion OS X Update

But this didn't work, and now even Dropbox won't start-up anymore :)

The permissions look like like the attached?

drwxr-xr-x+ 3 root wheel 102 Jun 18 00:06 Preview.app

The error looks like a permissions problem after seeing the "The file “Preferences” couldn’t be opened because you don’t have permission to view it."

Not sure. Strange how it just started.
TextEdit should have drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 102 Jun 16 22:38 TextEdit.app

You've opened a text or photo from a linked directory like your downloads. If I remember correctly I just relinked it back where it should be, opened TextEdit, close any documents, exited out then relinked the directory again to what I had originally linked to. Hasn't messed up since.

I'll see if I can find the website I found about this.

edit: How to Link, Still looking for the method reference.

Thanks a lot for this information. Same problem as OP, but this fixed it for me.

Part of my details say this:

Application Specific Information:
dyld: launch, running initializers
/usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib
xpchelper reply message validation: sandbox creation failed: 1002
Container object initialization failed: NSCocoaErrorDomain:513 You don’t have permission to save the file “Containers” in the folder “Library”.

I've read each link in this thread and don't see any alias folders or symlinks (don't know what that is) in the Users folders. So I haven't a clue what I need to do to fix this.

I emailed Tim Cook about this issue and my email got passed on to Executive Relations, where a guy named Tajai made an attempt to call me at my house (was never home when he called) the past three days, and I called him back today.

After talking with him briefly, then being passed on to Ed from Support, the fix that did the trick for me was the following:

Shut the computer down.
Start it while holding the Option key.
Select the Recovery HD.
Open Terminal from the Utilities menu in the top.
Type in "resetpassword".
Select your account and change your password.
Go to the bottom and select Reset where it says something about Permissions (forget what exactly it says).
Make sure your account was still selected.
After that, go to the top left and select Restart under the Apple menu.
Let it restart as normal, and log in with the new password.
You may have some issues with keychain asking for your password and your new one isn't working. If this happens (it did to me), click cancel and let your desktop load. Then go to your Library<Keychains folder and drag the login.keychain file onto your desktop.
Restart the computer again.
See if TextEdit and Preview works!

I'm almost positive these were all the steps, so hopefully they make sense and work for you anyone who tries it.

Anybody else notice that TextEdit quits if it doesn't have an active window when Safari is launched?

Is this normal?

This worked for me perfectly! I didn't have to go through the ending part with canceling, dragging the keychain, etc. I just chose to Update the Keychain. Thank you for your contribution on this topic!
