12.1 update making iPhone XS Max hot

hey all.

I updated my iPhone XS Max this morning to iOS 12.1 and have noticed that since the update that if using it for a period of time,
say playing a game (not very graphically intensive), after about 15-20 mins the back is getting quite hot.

Then about 5 mins after that the screen dims (doesn’t get brighter if I change brightness).

This did not happen before I updated.

Anyone else experiencing anything like this since 12.1?
