I'm an android man and have been given an IPAD AIR version 1 as a present. I'm a techie guy and thought I would see what all this JB is about. I root phones and tablets, therefore I'm assuming it's the same sort of thing.

Can someone please let me know where I start jailbreaking my IPAD ie which way is best? Any helpful hints greatly received.

Look into Checkra1n, it supports most A5-A11 devices running iOS 12.3+
specifically for A7 devices use this workaround (it's a little tricky to get down), More info on the A7 'right before trigger' bug
(
I got my 5s, A7, 12.4.7 jailbroken this way after several attempts)

once you get it jailbroken, open up Checkra1n loader app, tap install Cydia
once that's done, open Cydia and install the following essential tweaks (tap 'Complete Upgrade' after cydia first refreshes):

-Appsync Unified | Karen's Repo (cydia.akemi.ai)
(let's you install unisgned apps)

-Apple File Conduit 2 | BigBoss Repo
(let's you view the jailbroken filesystem in apps)

-SmartLPM | Packix Repo (repo.packix.com)
(a smart low power mode)

-Sentinel | Dynastic Repo (repo.dynastic.co)
(free SafeShutdown alternative, puts your phone in a fake shutdown/hibernation state at set battery % to help avoid losing JB)

-Activator | BigBoss Repo
(Basically Tasker for iOS)

-KeepMyJB | Packix Repo (repo.packix.com)
(removes 'Software Update' and 'Erase All Content' from settings)

Configure Power button to Respring when held:
-open Activator, tap Anywhere> Sleep Button> Long Hold> System Actions> Respring

Just be aware that jailbreaking is NOT equal to rooting. Rooting gives you full access and you can do anything. Jailbreaking simply removes the constraints preventing you from modifying system files. it does not give you the ability to do with your device what you like (such as installing other operating systems or ROMs).

As long as you have that clear in your mind then your expectations about what you can and can't do with jailbreaking will be aligned.
