I've been running my laptop off the mains for nearly 3 years. In that time it's run from the battery for no more than 48hrs in total.

The other day my battery performance went from almost full 98% to 0%/1%

Is that it, finished, gone, dead?

Is it better to remove a battery when constanly running off the mains?

cheers

Many say yes, Apple says it doesn't matter, I don't really know. But, you seem to have an extreme case and almost exclusively use the AC adapter, so I'd say take out the battery when you don't need it.

Have you calibrated the battery lately?

This doesn't really answer your question but have you checked to see if you might be eligible for a battery replacement under the exchange programme, which was launched last year?

unfortunately not eligible (felt like I was checking my lottery numbers, the excitement, then the disappointment :( )

Well if you haven't used the battery for more than 48 hours in the past 3 years, I'd say it looks like you don't really need a replacement.

Anyhow not periodically using and draining the battery will result in its premature death, as apple says you should calibrate the battery once a month and use it once in awhile.
