I put together some resources for people who want to upgrade the display on their 12” PowerBooks.

Anyone who has used a 12” PowerBook knows that the display is a weak point, washed out colours and bad viewing angles. The result of using a TN LCD.

The only upgrade I’ve seen is a 12.1” 1400x1050 AFFS panel from the Thinkpad X60 range, these panels are sort after as are the x60‘s themselves.

However, there are other AFFS options with the same resolution (1024x768) as standard but with a much improved image, higher brightness (when new), better contrast ratio and nearly 180 viewing angles. I purchased HT12x21-221 from a Compaq TC4200 from eBay for £20.

Below is a list of the panel model numbers and the machines they can be found in, all have the same 20 pin LVDS connector and should work.

Ifixit guide should be similar for all models, the biggest difference is some panels had touchscreens so the digitizers and front protection needs to be removed.

Hope this helps anyone looking to upgrade.

I found a 12.1” 1280x1024 panel on eBay, from memory think the manufacturer was Samsung but I could be wrong. Anyway it sits in a drawer awaiting the right time to be installed... probably never! I should get around to it as it would be an awesome upgrade
Ahh, the drawer of unfinished projects… I know it well :)
