Today, I took my usual walk (same exact path and distance) and I noticed my step count was off by more than 50%. Step count is usually ~5500 steps and after my walk, the step count was 2600.

Phone did not shut down at any point during the walk, either. Pretty disappointed to see this happen. I rely on step count pretty heavily.

Anyone else observe massive step count discrepancies?

I haven’t done so in a long time but when I checked the step counter more regularly after routine walks it used to vary 10-20% each time.

Up until I got my 12 Pro back in November, I relied on my 7 plus for step count and it never this issue...

My previous XR counted steps correctly so I'm guess the 12 series phones may be less accurate to counting steps. Hopefully other members on here will chime in with their experiences.

Stock health app.
You gents should try a third party workout app to see if the problem persist. If it does, you know (more than likely) it is an iOS bug. If the problem doesn't occur with the third party app, then you know it is a stock app problem.

I use the app "WorkOutDoors." It is a paid app but, it is far superior to the stock app in every way. I am sure there may be a couple of free pedometer apps, if you want to go that route.

I've never found any iPhone to accurately count steps. The best pedometer I've ever used are those cheapo things you cllip to your belt

I mean, I guess my issue isn’t that iPhones are 100% accurate. What happened is that for some odd reason, my 12 Pro decided it was going to be WAY off in its accuracy. Like over 50%.

I don’t care if it’s 100-200 steps off, but when we are talking thousands of steps off? Yeah, that’s bad...

We’re you using your iPhone during either walk? Was it in the same pocket during both walks? From my understanding the pedometer function relies on movement. Holding it, or placing it in different pockets could affect the reading. But 50% seems like a huge difference. Maybe power cycle the iPhone?

It was in the same left front pocket. I’ve held it in my hand to view the step count as it’s displayed in order to match it up with my real step count. iPhones seem to be pretty accurate (at least up until this point).

I agree 50% off is no bueno.
