According to applehacks.net the procedure is as follows:

1) remove the drive from the Apple TV

2) back up your drive! Make an image of it (see the harddrive upgrade tutorial for this)

3) Connect the drive to a regular Mac (use a Firewire or USB drive dock)

4) Install OS X (Intel version) to the drive (we suggest a slim install – no printer drivers etc.)

5) Boot from this drive, and set it up as you would like it. Make sure you do updates so it is at least 10.4.8.

6) Reboot to your normal OS X install.

Ok, you now have your fresh OS X install which will form the base of the customised OS X you will need for the Apple TV.

7) Remove mach_kernel from root of the drive containg the ATV install.

8 ) Replace it with the customised mach_kernel that you’ll find on Hackint0sh.org.

9) Replace /System/Libary/Coreservices/boot.efiwith the same file from your backup of the Apple TV OS drive (OSBoot partition).

10) Run bless:

bless --folder=/Volumes/OSBoot/System/Library/CoreServices --file=/Volumes/OSBoot/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi --setBoot

11) Delete all the Nvidia kexts (all beginning with NVD, there should be 5) from the target drive (in /System/Library/Extensions).

12) Transfer the drive back to the Apple TV

13) Turn the Apple TV on and cross your fingers.

About step 5: my MacBook Pro 5,5 can't boot Tiger, since the earliest it shipped with is Leopard so I wouldn't be able to boot the ATV's drive, however, I'm wondering if step 8 is really necessary. I have the install disks for an iMac Core Duo which are 10.4.11,beyond 10.4.8 which they claim you need to update to. Hopefully that would mean that the ATV would boot in to the set up process when the rest of the steps are carried out?

And yeah, I know there are images for 10.5, but I'd prefer 10.4 as it should be faster and everything I need is supported under 10.4 (also it was the first version of OS X I ever used - on a dell no less - so I have a soft spot for it :p).

Could anyone who has performed the procedure share some words of wisdom? :)

Did you get it figured?

The instructions your following seem way more complicated then they need to be, try this instead.

It's much simpler a process. I used a 10.5.8 prebuild image that is linked in the guide.

My ATV is en route atm, will be getting it next week. I'll definitely try with the disks I have as soon as I get it and report back.

I really don't want leopard, but I guess I might have to settle for a 10.5 prebuilt image if there aren't any for 10.4 floating around.

Why don't you want Leopard? Curious because that's what I run on my ATV and it's great. Do you have some evidence for Tiger being "faster" on the ATV?

Hmm, maybe you're right. As long as I can get A/V via component, Crystal HD and ethernet working I'll be happy camper.

Make sure you go with the 10.5.5 image, then, instead of 10.5.8. Or use the latter and a cheap USB audio adapter.

Given CrystalHD in your list, it seems you want to use it for playback? CrystalHD will not help if you are running Tiger or Leopard; it's only useful under the linux-based XBMC and (possibly) under the stock ATVOS. I once installed the OS X driver for my CrystalHD card on ATV1 and wasn't able to view HD material reliably. ATV1 now only does Leopard Server duty for me.

If you want to use the ATV1 for HD material playback, the only real option is XBMC + CrystalHD. ATVOS with CrystalHD apparently can work, but the types of files that will play is more limited.

Thought so, thanks for confirming.

Ah, I was under the impression that it "just worked" (after installing the driver) with XMBC, as that's what I was told by a friend with a CHD in his netbook running 10.5.8.

Major bummer :-/

Oh, it "just works" perfectly with Sam Nazarko's Crystalbuntu image (Optimized Ubuntu install with CrystalHD card and XBMC). For me it did not work well with OS X, i.e., didn't play HD smoothly. I'm much happier with a couple of ATV2s and the ATV1 as iTunes server.
