anyone notice the iPhone 4S shows a wider view when in camera mode as opposed to video recording mode? When recording video the view is more zoomed in.

Is the 4S recording at 1080p then cropping the view for software stabilization and upsampling it back to 1080p?

or

is the 4S recording at 8MP (3264x2448) using the extra margin to do stabilization and cropping it down to 1080p?

Im leaning towards the latter. Im assuming the 4S doesn't use optical stabilization with the lens, but software stabilization in conjunction with the hardware gyro sensor.

Same is true on the iPhone 4.

I assume that the video is using (in case of the 4S) 1920x1080 pixels on the sensor. Perhaps it moves around that 1920x1080 window as part of image stabilization? Don't know.

Yea that's how software stabilization works.

When in video mode, double tap the screen. Boom. No longer zoomed in.

LMAO it worked. I was trying pinch to zoom instead because that's how it worked in camera photo mode.

However the video mode still isn't as wide as photo mode.

Someone taught me the double tap thing because I'd constantly complain about getting a bit of my finger in the shot but I'd never see it while recording. :D

When taking a photo the iphone uses the full camera sensor (2592 pixels by 1936 pixels).
Which gets the full wide view of the lens.In order to record video the iphone appears to only use the middle of the sensor to record (1280 pixels by 720 pixels); and it ignores the pixels around it.Which then cuts down the field of view by almost half; and that looks like it has zoomed in.

are you using iphone4 sensor dimensions? because the 4S uses 3264x2448 photo and 1920x1080 for video.

the phone is probably using the whole 3264x2448 but only showing the center 1920x1080 for what is being recorded after using the extra margins for software stabilization.
