I used to have this on my Mac a long while back. Out of warrantee and I didn't want to pay, so I never got it fully diagnosed/repaired. Searching suggested it was a bad transistor, power supply or possibly motherboard. The only thing that worked for me (admittedly a bad solution) was to change the processor performance setting to 'reduced'.

Mines still in warranty...Its been doing this since i got it...Apple are saying it might be a software fault

Its been for 2 weeks testing and they could make the fault happen..It might be fine for weeks then have a case of shutting down all the time.

How can i prove its a hardware fault and not software ?

You can't but if it's under warrantee you will get satisfaction eventually. That's a good thing.
