I have a SSD, which might help mitigating some handling issues of Lion. I upgraded from a 2008 MBP with SL to a 2011 MBP with Lion. Everything is faster of course, and so far I did not have any compatibility problems with software, including my own little programs.
I'm not claiming that Lion is better than SL. My comparison is skewed by the hardware upgrade, and I'm aware that other's have problems. However, I don't think that I'm "lucky", because I have the same hardware and OS as everyone else. Differences in performance can have a few reasons:
- the SSD
- use of software that doesn't play well with Lion (MS Office?)
- different use, different perception of fast/slow
- migration/update issues (I did a clean install of everything)
- a hardware defect
It might be worth to visit an apple store just to exclude the hardware defect.
That clears things up a bit.
What's your ram and which late 2011 model did you purchase? I am interested in an SSD upgrade but since it's been only 4 days since I purchased my Macbook, I'm just waiting a little. Could you tell me some good ssd options and the one you picked up?
I am using MS Office, legally downloaded, for mac. It does lag a bit when I start it up, but seems to operate fine. Maybe it could be a cause of lag.
About an hour ago I was playing a few youtube videos, downloading a 100 mb file, and using the appstore, but suddenly the beach ball showed up and the computer remained frozen for 15 minutes until I had to force-shut it down.
My specs are honestly very good for the programs I use. I do video/photography work on my iMac. I am planning to upgrade my ram and replace my hdd with an ssd but that aside, I think 4gb is a lot and shouldn't be causing such problems.
