Also I read an article from a few days ago saying Seagate has began shipping a newer version of this hard drive, how can I know which one is new and which one is old?

It only got announced last week. Usually takes a couple of weeks to become available to the big online sellers and then in limited quantities. Distributors and bricks and mortar stores will take a couple weeks more.

NewEgg is probably the best bet in the US.

whats the difference between old 500GB and new 500GB? they both only have 4GB NAND....only 750GB has 8GB NAND...

I just installed that drive in my mid 2009 MBP and am very happy so far.

My boot time is at 15 seconds and as it learns my applications, they open fast as well.

In fact, I bought mine from Amazon also.

New drive will have higher density platters for the mechanical drive, therefore it'll be a bit quicker.
