I have been looking into both the base model 128GB MBP 2017 and 256GB rMBP 2016(same price)...thats the best I can do with my budget right now. I know SSD is important but I have been reading online about ppl having issues with the 2016 keyboards.

I dont mind using external storage if the 2017 is a better option.

I recommend 128GB to no one. It's an insufficient storage size for most people and your resale value will automatically be crap. Regardless of the keyboards in the 2016 models, 256GB (to me) is a necessity in 2017. Even if you could live with 128GB today, who knows what your needs will be in 4 or 5 years.

I have heard nothing that completely convinces me that the keyboards on the 2017 are head and shoulders better or less problematic than the 2016 MBPs. Given that, I would select the one with more storage

Get what you can afford... Personally I'd get the 2017.. kaby lake !

My two cents, but so far the evidence for improvements in the 2017 keyboards has been anecdotal at best. Unless you are convinced that having Kaby Lake is a crucial factor, I would give priority to the larger SSD size.

I'm certainly biased by my usage when saying this, but I really think 128GB can't possibly be enough these days, let alone in a few years.

Forget 128GB. That's like putting on a pair of underwear that's way too small; you're gonna regret it in a month, if not sooner! Your budget's $1300 plus tax, right? Ok, if you have to have Kaby Lake, why not sell some blood or something and come up with the extra $200 to get the 256GB Pro? Either that or get a 2016 refurb. Plenty of them in the online Apple Store, and they're only $1189. Do it!
