I was looking to get a laptop for one of my parents and I have a friend of mine who has an excellent condition 2015 13” MacBook Pro who’s selling it for $400. Its the top of the line 13” (for that time) and it is in nearly flawless condition outside of some keyboard wear. This would only be used for web browsing, email, and some light Office work.

Would something like this still be a viable option? I know something like the newest Air would make more sense but I was trying to spend as little as possible as it won’t be used much and is only needed for light work. If anyone has any thoughts let me know. Thank you!

It this is a spec'd i7 3.1GHz/16GB model then you can still use this laptop for any task. It may not be as quick as the current BTO models but it is still more than capable of handling anything you throw at it. For $400 you still get an awesome laptop in my opinion.

Yes that’s the model. Thank you for the feedback, I think I’m gonna pull the trigger on it.

I have the BTO fully spec'd 2015 13-inch i7/16GB MBP as well as the base 2015 13-inch i5/8GB MBP (see my sig). I recently sourced the base 13-inch MBP for $160 from eBay and am using it to run MacOS 12 and even at the minimum configuration, it has been performing very well. I'm sure the model you're getting won't give you any issues for years to come depending on your requirements and usage. :apple:

My roommate does heavy work on the 2015 13" with only 8GB of ram.
Multi GB photoshop files, huge multitrack audio sessions.
While it's not the ideal machine for this usecase, it only struggles because of Adobe being a ram hog after projects are closed.

I have the 3.1GHz i7 version with 16GB of RAM. It's a great computer. It's right now the oldest 13" MacBook Pro model to be supported for the next release of macOS. But that's the only thing that would give me pause about it. If nothing else, that guaranteed at least three years of use wherein Apple is supporting that system with security updates.

It should do for light work and basic usage, especially the upgraded model. It is still a dual core model though and will struggle with some things.
I revently installed the Monterey beta on my 2015 13” (i7/16GB) and it feels more sluggish than usual. It is a beta though.

Since the machine is older now one issue that might come up is the battery. If it starts expanding or needs service then it will cost $200 to replace (at the Apple Store), which would be half of what you are paying for it.

If it's in excellent shape, $400 sounds like a "fair-enough" deal to me.

My 2015 MacBook Pro (base model) is still doing just fine.
