So I tried to hook up my air to the panasonic TV with the mini display adapter over HDMI. When I go to sound in system preferences it "sees" the TV but when I select it it says "The selected device has no output controls.". Is there a work around for this other than using the audio jack?

Doing a quick google, it appears that it's likely that it is not capable of carrying audio through the displayport in this case.

Which year model of 13" Air do you have?

Either your Air doesn't support audio through mDP, or your mDP to HDMI adapter doesn't support it.

I have the latest air and I do get audio over HDMI to other devices just no. This particular TV. I tried it on a friends TV and it works. Sorry I should have pointed it out in the first post.

It can carry audio on the latest models with mdp providing the adapter is spec 1.3 (i think??) and the cable is the right spec. If you have got audio working over HDMI with other things have you checked your mac sound preferences as i think new recognised HDMI devices are muted by default.
